IOU Meeting Agenda – 4/18/05
Welcome: 7:30 at Java Joes

April 23rd – Hiking at Ledges State Park. Meet in the Super Target parking lot in Urbandale off of exit 141 in the northwest corner of the parking lot. We will leave at 1:00 p.m. Please RSVP to iowaoutdoorunlimited.com by April 22nd so we don’t accidentally leave anyone behind.
April 24th – Seven Oaks Fun Ride with central Iowa Trail Association and International Mountain Biking Association in Boond Iowa (where we went skiing). Meet at 11:00 a.m. at Boone we will be mountain biking about 5 miles at your own pace. This is a social ride with the IMBA Trail Care Crew so bring your lunch. There is no cost or registration. Contact Mike Baker at mikebaker1975@hotmail.com or find out more information at www.centraliowatrails.org (if the site is up and running again it was hacked last Friday). This even covers some very challenging terrain and is not for the light of heart or beginner.
May 7th – Garlic Mustard Workday in Ashworth/Greenwood Parks, Des Moines with the Iowa Sierra Club. Help pull this invasive plant that crowds out native plants of the forest floor. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the trailhead parking area for the Bill Riley Bike Trail, south of Grand Avenue on 45th Street in Des Moines. The Sierra Club will be working there all morning so come for an hour or stay till noon. People will be there to show you what the plant looks like and where to work. Wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. They will provide bags, bring your own gloves. For more information or to RSVP please contact Jo at 276-6359 or JOHUDSON2@msn.com for more information.
May 13th to 15th – Camping at Jester Park. IOU will be helping with some trail work during the day or other maintenance that day. This is a stewardship activity as well as a fun social event. Cost will be minimal and if you cannot camp come and hang out. IOU will be collecting money for community food so cooking will be easier than trying to cook several different meals at the same time. Friday night come fed but plan to have a cook off. Cook off rules are last names A – L will be presenting appetizers and last names beginning with M – Z will be cooking deserts. Everyone will vote on their favorite appetizer and desert and the winners will receive a prize ;-). Bring your own beverages. Only other rule you have to cook it on site.

Cook off Friday night for appetizers and deserts otherwise come fed.
Saturday:
Breakfast: Breakfast Burrito
Lunch: Cold cut sandwiches with fixings
Dinner: Build your own kabob
Sunday:
Breakfast: French Toast
* Food will be provided with the exception of the Friday night appetizers and deserts.

Summer Trips
Rocky Mountain National Park is our August trip destination August 7 to 11th. More information to come please sign up ASAP deadline is May 1st. Sign-ups after that will only be available to people as permits are available. A deposit is necessary to secure a space.
Devil’s Lake trip June 10th – 12th. We will be driving up in two or three groups depending on how many people will be attending the campout. One group may elect to leave on Thursday night to help secure sites for the weekend the other group(s) will leave either Friday morning or Friday after work and arrive fairly late. IOU will take care of the menu so please let us know if you’re a vegetarian or if you have a strong aversion to a certain type of food or any allergies. RSVP as soon as possible but not later than May 1st a non-refundable deposit of $25 is required to hold your spot.
Mt. Rushmore over the 4th of July. Tim and Anna Whipple are taking over as co-chairs for this trip. The dates for the trip are July 2-5. Depending how flexible other people are, we could leave Friday afternoon (July 1) and break the outbound trip into shorter legs. Anyone who is interested can contact us at tawhipple@mchsi.com. I don't want to wait too long to make reservations, so please ask people to RSVP to us by May 6 a deposit for this trip will also be required.
New Business
Anyone interested in doing or volunteering at the SOAR 8 hour adventure challenge on July 16th please let me know. The challenge is geared towards beginners and teams of two or four complete the challenge which includes.
20-25 miles of biking (gravel roads and single track) 2-3 miles of paddling 3-5 miles of trail running 2-4 hours of orienteering
For more information on the SOAR Challenge check out their website http://www.soar-adventures.com/soar_8_hour_adventure_challenge/index.html. I think it would be fun to put a team together! Lets do it. Registration fee is $65 per person but the proceeds will go to Lake Ahquabi State Park to provide a permanent orienteering course. The registration fee also includes: maps, canoe rental, PFD's, paddles, prizes, post race meal for racers and prizes.
Thursday evening April 21st at 7:30 everyone is invited to Rasmussen Bike Shop 301 Grand Ave in West Des Moines to view a slide show of trails from all over the world. Very casual. BYOB.
Friday 6 p.m. at Ashworth pool parking lot join the International Mountain Biking Association for a trail ride. These trails are good for beginners so don’t be shy! If you do not have a bike Ryan Hanser may be able to find one for you to use. He can be reached at ryan@hanser.com.
Wilderness Adventures asked me to pass along their summer backpacking trip. The backpacking trips are limited to 2 to 4 people are geared for the beginning backpacker. They are planning a trip for July 17th – 23rd or July 24th – 30th. Cost is about is between $905 and $1,100 per person. If your interested please contact Jim Liechty at madccb@madisoncountyparks.org or call 515-462-3536.
